Unit 9
Grammar: How
to Use 'Wish'
I.
. Wishes:
1. First step Distinguish between Wishes about the present and Wishes
about the past:
- We look at the
verb in the source sentence, if it is in the simple present then we change
it to the simple past and if it is in the past we change it to the past
perfect
A. Present wish :
Form: Wish + (that) + past simple:
It is a situation in the present that we don’t like or we like to have
it the other way.
Tom lives far from school so he usually
arrives late.
Tom: I wish I didn’t live far
from the school. If only I didn’t live far from the school.
Source sentence: I don’t play sports , I am fat.
Target sentence: If only I played sports / I wish
I played sports
B. Past wish/ Wishes about the past:
Form: Wish + (that) + past perfect:
We can use 'wish' with the past perfect to talk about regrets from the
past. These are
things that have already happened but we wish they'd happened in a
different way.
This use of 'wish' is very similar to the third conditional.
• I wish that I had studied harder at
school. (I didn't study hard at school, and
now I'm sorry about it.)
• I wish that I hadn't eaten so much
yesterday! (But I did eat a lot yesterday.
Now I think it wasn't a good idea.)
• I wish that the train had been on time.
(But unfortunately the train was late,
and so I missed my interview.)
